SABIC is returning to support the Festival of Thrift for the second year running and is calling on other businesses to get involved with the UK’s award-winning flagship sustainability event.

One of the Tees Valley’s leading businesses, Wilton-based SABIC places sustainability as one of its core values and it is a founding member of the UK Plastics Pact, a world-first initiative to reduce the amount of plastic packaging and to build a stronger recycling system.

Claire Wordsworth, Senior Communications Business Partner, SABIC, said: “We are delighted to support this unique festival again, which is the largest event of its type in the UK.  The Festival of Thrift is a fun, family-orientated event but gives very important messages about living sustainably, which mirrors SABIC’s commitments too.

“This event is a jewel within the Tees Valley, is right on our doorstep and a cultural delight.  I would urge other local businesses to get involved in some way too.”

SABIC is one of the founding members that have signed up to the UK Plastics Pact,  a world-first initiative which aims to transform the plastic packaging system in the UK and keep plastic in the economy and out of the environment. The company is also using advanced scientific and technology expertise, across a range of partnerships to seek solutions for environmental issues on a global basis.

Over 20 SABIC employees volunteered at the event last year, with a similar number planned to take part in 2018.  SABIC volunteers will also be present in a staffed SABIC area giving important messages about plastics and the environment along with key partners.

SABIC’s Site Director Daren Smith said: “SABIC recognizes that in order to succeed in today’s global marketplace, sustainability must be embedded in the way we do business. That’s why our vision is to integrate the environmental, social, and economic dimensions of sustainability into our core business strategy.  We are delighted to offer our support to The Festival of Thrift which supports all of these dimensions.”

Festival of Thrift Director Stella Hall said: “Our festival is the UK’s national celebration of how to live well in a sustainable way and attracted over 45,000 visitors who share our enthusiasm last year.

“However the festival would not happen without the generosity of companies and organisations and SABIC’s fabulous commitment to work alongside the Festival for the second year running is a very welcome boost.

“Sharing the same aims of promoting sustainability, knowledge, health and wellbeing as well as supporting the local economy, it is a perfect fit for us. We are very pleased indeed to be working with the SABIC team once again in 2018 and we’d urge other companies to follow their lead and get involved too.”

The Festival of Thrift takes place on Saturday 22 & Sunday 23 September 2018 at Kirkleatham Museum and Grounds near Redcar. This year the festival is preceded by a launch event and party on Friday 21 September and a Tees Valley-wide temporary art installation, Viewpoints by Festival of Thrift, from 19th – 27th August 2018.
