Volunteer

Festival of Thrift is looking for friendly volunteers interested in cinema or community projects to support a new film festival.

Tread Softly Film Festival will take place at Yarm Wellness Centre on Friday 28 February, Saturday 1 March and Sunday 2 March.

We will be showing 5 films across 3 days themed around our relationship to nature, with workshops and talks connecting the films. We’re looking for people who want to help this event happen.

What you will be doing:

  • Chatting to audiences about our exciting programme of screenings, talks and workshops.
  • Helping set up the event and support the running of the festival.
  • There will also be opportunities to shape the future of film screenings and get involved in other projects at Festival of Thrift.


We’re looking for people who are:

When you need to be available

Friday 28 February: 3pm – 8pm

Saturday 1 March: 10am – 3pm or 3pm- 8pm

Sunday 2 March: 12:30pm-4:30pm or 4:30pm-8:30pm

You can volunteer for all 3 days or just one. We can also be flexible on the times, just let us know in advance.

We will also run an information session on what to expect on Zoom on

Parade Volunteering

Friday 23 September
5-8.30pm
Support our team to deliver a vibrant and energetic parade celebrating ‘Our Common Wealth’. Join Compact Disco as they lead young people, adults, community members, musicians and street performers to dance and sing their way along the Esplanade in Redcar to launch the festival.Roles would include welcoming and supporting participating as they arrive to get ready and support groups along the parade route.

Launch Party

Friday 23 September
6-8.30pm
Welcoming guests, pouring drinks, setting up and clearing down buffet.

Festival Signage & Site Dressing Volunteering

Friday 23 September
10am-5pm
Helping distribute and writing chalkboards across site. Good writing skills necessary. Helping put festival flags round site

Welcome/info point

Saturday 24 & Sunday 25 September
Signposting, information giving, workshop booking, merchandise selling, brochure distribution, programme knowledge, liaising with production and artists laison team.

Town Is The Menu - Food

Saturday 24 & Sunday 25 September
Help with serving food - no experience necessary, run by Magic Hat who are all loads of fun. Sittings are 12pm & 2pm

Enlighten Tent - Talks

Saturday 24 & Sunday 25 September
Remain in the talks tent, help welcome speakers as they arrive and ensure they’re looked after, encourage audiences to come in and help with passing a microphone to audience members who want to ask a question. It is an interesting role.

Workshop Support

Saturday 24 & Sunday 25 September
Craft Marquee - Taking money on door / helping practitioners Walled Garden - On gate taking participants to Bothys and helping practitioners Toasting Gate - Signposting visitors to workshops - practitioner support. Floating help to cover breaks and any additional support related to the workshops.

Festival Signage

Saturday 24 & Sunday 25 September

Floating support across the site

Saturday 24 & Sunday 25 September
Covering support as needed during the event. Main role - floating information across the site and to cover breaks and lunch. Knowledge of festival programme.
