Embracing Sustainability: Festival of Thrift Commits to Sustainable Transport for a Greener Future

Festival of Thrift returns in September to its new home in Billingham, Stockton on Tees.

The annual celebration of sustainable living is proud to announce its commitment to promoting sustainable transport options for visitors this year.

In its ongoing efforts to minimise environmental impact and inspire positive change, the festival is encouraging festivalgoers to adopt eco-friendly modes of transportation, in line with their mission of creating a greener and more sustainable future.

Over its 10 years life span the festival has become renowned for its innovative approach to environmental consciousness and community engagement. As the festival grows, so does its dedication to implementing eco-friendly practices, and sustainable transport is now at the forefront of their initiatives.

“By prioritising sustainable transport, we are taking a significant step towards reducing our carbon footprint and setting an example for other events and festivals. Audience travel currently makes up nearly 50% of our carbon emissions,” said Emma Whitenstall, Executive Director. “We believe that every action counts, and embracing greener transportation options aligns perfectly with our core values of fostering a sustainable, inclusive, and eco-conscious community.”

To encourage attendees to adopt sustainable transport options, Festival of Thrift is collaborating with local public transport providers to enhance access and convenience. Additionally, the festival site will feature dedicated bicycle parking areas, promoting cycling as an eco-friendly alternative to driving.

“As we make these changes, we recognise the collective impact of individual choices,” Emma added. ” Festival of Thrift is all about showing that sustainable living can be enjoyable, accessible, and beneficial for everyone. Together, we can pave the way for a brighter, greener future.”

Festival of Thrift continues to innovate, providing attendees with an unforgettable experience that blends creativity, entertainment, and environmental awareness. The festival showcases sustainable art installations, brilliant outdoor arts performances, workshops, talks, and various activities centred around sustainable living and upcycling.

Options this year include a hassle-free park and ride service from nearby Stockton in a bid to reduce traffic congestion in Billingham. Festivalgoers arriving from Redcar can opt for a festival pre-bookable coach service, and festival parking in Billingham is available, complete with a carbon offset fee.

In embracing sustainable transport, and by joining forces with attendees and partners, Festival of Thrift hope to inspire a broader movement towards sustainability that extends far beyond the festival weekend.
